Family History

The clan produced not only poets, musicians and clerics. Duncan McRae was a noted warrior said to have defended practically single-handed the almost impregnable castle of Eilean Donan against the attack of 400 McDonald fighting men, killing their chief with his last arrow.

‘Dear Mother [Florence, who had both a sister/ best friend and a granddaughter called Myrna],

I have missed a week in writing to you, but you will see why later. Part was written at sea and a short note from here where we’ve now been a fortnight … . Haven’t done any work for seven weeks, so naturally will be slightly stale. … Apart from being on leave we have resided in a first class pub which is really our officers’ mess and is very comfortable. Of course there has been the usual reception, routine of records, issue of equipment etc. In our spare moments we have been to see the oldest church in England 11th century at Christchurch, etc. …’

  1. What an absolute treat to read this David. I loved it. And what great detective work on your part as well. One of my favourite bits were the comments by the author Mrs Sarah K Anderson (or whomever) about the Presbyterian Minister, the C of E Minister and the (wayward) Wesleyans. Myrna’s family has a very interesting history and one that made a significant impact on early Victoria. Good luck with the rest of the filing cabinet. x

  2. What grit and determination she had; talk about gutsy. The voyage alone would have flattened most of us. Thank God for the baccy; probably something to look forward to at the end of another very tedious day. Your girls are fortunate to have such strong genetic material.

  3. Very interesting read David! Quite a family story and picture of life back then, even if who penned it is unclear. Thanks for sharing it and your thoughts 🙂

  4. very exciting. Keep going David! Let’s have some more of that Papist nonsense as served up by Church of England clergymen! Not like any such that I’m familiar with.

  5. Hi David. I came across your blog yesterday, 30 August, 2025 and am reaching out to you as I, too, am a descendant of the Smeaton Anderson boys, with my forebear being John Anderson, who designed and owned the Anderson Mill at Smeaton.

Are you aware that the Anderson family is holding a family reunion on Saturday, 18 October, 2025 at the Smeaton Mill from 11am-4pm? As we do not have any descendants from William’s line, I would love for you and your extended family to come.

If you can attend, tickets are available on Humanitix under 2025 Anderson Family Reunion. Registration to attend is necessary for catering purposes and registrations close at the end of September.

In the journal of Sarah Anderson that you included in your blog, you queried if Sarah would have retired to her cabin to enjoy a pipe. My father, William Ord, grandson of John Anderson, always said that Sarah would sit in business meetings and bring out a pipe to smoke. She, apparently, was the business brains and accounting quiz behind the success of the Anderson clan.

Hope you can join us at the reunion, David.

    regards

    Rosie Johnston
